As a UX Researcher in this role, I conducted and analyzed research; ideated on concepts, such as the proto-personas, based on that research analysis; and presented my findings to a project leader.
Role: UX Researcher
Tasks: Research, including app testing and an audit of controls on both the fridge and app; proto-persona creation; empathy maps creation; information fill-out in customer journey map
Tools: Samsung Family Hub fridge, Samsung SmartThings app, Mural, Adobe Illustrator, physical whiteboards
Timeline: 2.5 months
Is the Smart part of Smart refrigerators viable for the mainstream public?
Short answer: No, not yet but they have potential
Smart refrigerators account for only a small percent of the market but are gaining in popularity. The average cost of a Smart refrigerator was approximately $3,600 in 2013.
With a teammate, I conducted a multi-phase audit of the Samsung Family Hub Smart refrigerator to understand why a digital user interface and internal monitoring system might be desirable. In our audit, we gathered information used to create proto-personas, empathy maps, and a customer journey map.
While Samsung has a way to go to earn this team’s purchases, their Family Hub Smart refrigerator has the potential to be the hub of many families.
